rick-ross-summer-jam1

You know that summer is officially in full blast when the whale-ish Rick Ross starts making appearances sans clothing, sporting a pimp chain bearing his own likeness nestled between his prodigious man-boobs. You also know it’s summer when hippies, drug advocates, nudists, and all-around freaks alike start getting antsy about the infamous Burning Man Festival (see the “Mutant Vehicle” below), where people go to trip out, build (& burn) crazy shit, rave sans clothing, and let their freak flags fly. As such, everyone is looking for some hot new cuts with which to enjoy the sun. Allow TDOV to hook up that new package.

First off the press is a TDOV original, mixed up by our close affiliate M.D.C.. Combining rap and techno is not common, let alone easy, but Mr. C brings the heat on this incredible Rick Ross/Calvin Harris mash-up. If you’re not feelin this one, your ears are broken.

Calvin Harris vs. Rick RossM.D.C. 10/10

At #2 we have Shwayze further bridging the gap between hip-hop and techno. With trippy synth riffs, numinous sound effects, and lines like,”I move on like the Greyhound Bus/ I go town to town and I prey on sluts,” Shwayze’s “Buzzin” remix has the makings of a legit hip-hop/tech fusion.

Buzzin (Classixx Remixx) – Shwayze 8/10

Here we have an epic & raw techno banger by Fake Blood that is not for the weak-hearted. Hate it or love it. Think Daft Punk meets Satan.

Stuck on Repeat (Fake Blood Remix) – Little Boots 7/10

Last but not least is your standard tech cut courtesy of Sebastien Tellier. Perfect for driving, raving, skateboarding, relaxing, or whatever, this one flows gently and secretly gets your head bumpin.

L’Amour Et La Violence (Le Defi Remix) – Sebastien Tellier 7.5/10

This is not your computer tripping , it’s Pablo Picasso fooling your brain into thinking it’s processing copious quantities of  well, illicit pschyotropic substances.

Anyways, songs songs songs. Been listening to lots of the London-based DJ Mike Skinner aka The Streets. The Cockney accent gives the lyrics a great cadence, emphasizing the concatenation of the sometimes caustically hilarious, sometimes heartbreakingly personal lyrics.

The Irony of It All-The Streets 7.5/10.

Trust Me-The Streets 7.5/10

Blinded By The Lights-The Streets 8/10

And to mix it up a little, a little slice of all-american mashup, courtesy of the The Hood Internet.

Reeling Police(Chamillionaire vs Passion Pit)-The Hood Internet 8/10

Wait, you mean three day weekends are an anomaly in the real world? What the fuck?!!

Daylight-Matt & Kim - 7.5/10- Warm, catchy riff guaranteed to make you feel better instantaneously.

Comfortable Up Here (Lil Wayne vs Royksopp)-The Hood Internet - 7/10. The Hood Internet, the premiere mash-up artists of the moment, put out another great genre-crossing fusion.

Human(Armin Van Buuren Remix)- The Killers - 7/10. Electro rework of the Killer’s single, it’s got more pep and the synth background while remaining faithful to the original’s overarching melody. Was very tempted to rename it the Martin Van Buuren remix.

Well, now that one of TDOV’s computers has quit being merely a paperweight, you can expect lots of new tunes to start poppin up.

Anyways, for many of us it is summer: get out in the sun and listen to these tunes. Enjoy.

Sleepyhead-Passion Pit vs. Mummers 7/10. Kinda hard to label this one-indie pop doesn’t really do it justice, but there seems no other way of classifying it.

Royksopp Forever-Royksopp 7.5/10. Royksopp’s new album dropped a couple of months ago, and this is definitely one of the cuts. This song starts slowly, so don’t let that put you off. Cinematic in the extreme. Just wait for the strings to drop.

Take On Me(The Twelves Remix)-A-Ha 7.5/10 Man, what a decade. This tune combines the familiar ’80s drum line, and great pop hit, and some modern electronica for a neo-retro dance beat. Break out the the leather and hair gel for this one.

Anthonio(Designer Drugs Remix)-Annie 8/10. Designer Drugs continue to baffle us as to how exactly they are American. Really? That’s not a forged birth certificate? Good old fashioned club electronica. ‘Nuff said.

The Sun Sets on Finals Week

Apologies for the slow pace of things around here at TDOV, the other two contributors have been MIA (yes AH and JC this is a F*@#ing challenge to step yo’ games up). Nevertheless, it is finals week here at CMC, and we’re all getting raped by some large test or paper or another, so TDOV is here to soothe the pain. Yes, it is 3am. And yes, perhaps I should be (aka start) studying for my international money & finance final in 11 hours. But I’m not, cuz it’s TDOV’s job to hook up those sick cuts that will cool you down when shit hits the fan (as I am about to experience).

This first one here is a euro-ass cut techno remix of The Whitest Boy Alive’s “Golden Cage” by “Fred Falke. If you are a shredda, you may recognize it from Joni Malmi’s part in Forum’s Forum or Against Em. Excellent skate cut.

Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix) – The Whitest Boy Alive – 8.5/10

Groove Armada + the ultimate techno remixers The Twelves? YES PLZ

Drop the Tough (The Twelves Remix) – Groove Armada – 8.5/10

A great chill/study song:

Emotion 98.6 - Mylo – 8/10

And last but not least, these next 3 are not your average TDOV techno remixes. Instead, although they are all from Lakai’s “Fully Flared” video, these are some more mellow jammers.

Hands of Time - Groove Armada 7.5/10

Kindof an 80’s cut, but great to skate to. I think it also derives much of its appeal from the fact that it’s in Silence of the Lambs during some scene where Hannibal is eatin some dude’s face off.

Goodbye HorsesQ Lazzarus – 6.5/10

In honor of all plants and foliage, male and female, today we celebrate by…yezir. Anyways, TDOV is obviously here with some questionable holiday cuts to f**k with your ears – you’ve probably never heard of any of the following artists, but they’ve made it this far so let’s give them a chance. First off we have a classic Ibiza-style tech lounge/ summer chiller aptly-named Brazil by unpronounceable but sick tech group Deadmau5:

Brazil – Deadmau5

And next up we have a SoCal summer anthem straight from our frat connect at USC that you can’t help but embrace even with the classically absurd pop-rap lyrics.

We Run LA – Ya Boy feat. Dr. Hollywood

And last but not least we have a classic southern rap-cruiser from some seriously unheard of southern G’s by the names of Mr. Pookie & Mr. Lucci. And yes, it is normal for such ridiculous names to raise red flags, but these guys almost pull it off.

Late Night Coastin’ – Mr. Lucci & Mr. Pookie
